Strong public backing for renewable energy across political parties, new YouGov poll reveals

A recent YouGov poll has revealed that a large majority of both Reform and Conservative supporters back increased renewable energy development, with a focus on UK industry and job opportunity creation in green industries.

Commissioned by Friends of the Earth, a YouGov poll into public renewable energy development support has been completed ahead of the UK Governments announcement of its revised climate plan. Due to be released before 29th October 2025, this plan will detail the government’s plan to reach the UK’s legally binding climate targets over the next 12 years.

The survey has concluded that eight in 10 people in the UK support the expansion of the renewable energy sector, with this trend being present across political parties. Despite recent party leadership moves to scale back climate target commitments, YouGov found that 83% of Conservative and 65% of Reform supporters favoured increased clean energy generation, highlighting the importance of public perceptions and the impacts of those on government policies and decisions.

There was also an emphasis on the potential boost to UK industry that a push in the renewable energy sector could bring. The poll found that there was strong support for more domestically made components, with 80% of supporters across all main political parties backing the initiative. A boost in the UK green employment sector, through expanding training and job opportunities, was also supported by 81% of respondents.

Gillian Cropper, Projects Director at CWP Energy, says “CWP are proud to be helping work towards the UK’s goals of becoming a renewable energy leader. Having been an employer and operator within the green sector for over 20 years, we are delighted to see the growing support of the public in relation to the green industry.”.
