The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has published a report showing the current 10-year forecast for emissions from the UK, revealing that the carbon output is projected to be almost a third more than the required amount to reach its legally binding climate change targets by 2050.
This is the second official warning in the last month that the climate change targets of the UK are at risk, with concerns mounting over the generation of clean energy not growing as quickly as should be. The report published by NESO details that over the next 10 years, the UK will produce 70m tons of carbon (MtCO2) more than the maximum amount possible to meet net zero by 2050, adding that the UK will need to go “further and faster” to reach clean energy development targets.
The findings of this report will likely put pressure on government development plans and boost funding and investment for clean energy infrastructure, further enabling and encouraging the development of renewable energy schemes across the UK.
