CWP Energy, major funder of the Star of Caledonia, celebrates project milestone

CWP Energy, major funder of the Star of Caledonia, celebrates the recent submission of a planning application for the project.

A planning application for the Star of Caledonia project at Gretna Green, of which CWP Energy is a major funder, has been submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council for their consideration.

CWP Energy is a leading renewable energy developer in the UK, with a long-standing connection to the Star of Caledonia, having been heavily involved since 2020. CWP Energy has pledged substantial funding for the Star of Caledonia project, which will be a shining beacon for Scottish tourism that is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors per year.

The journey of the Star of Caledonia began in 2001, where the idea of an England/Scotland border landmark was first broached by Alasdair Houston MBE of Gretna Green Ltd. Cecil Balmond’s ‘Star of Caledonia’ will form a major new cultural beacon and metaphor for the dynamism of the Scottish nation symbolising the energy and power of Scottish invention.

Plans have now been submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council seeking permission for a 33m LED-lit spiral sculpture and accompanying visitor hub, located within a biodiverse landscaped 15.7Ha site, which will be accessible to all.

CWP Energy has pledged £6 million towards the construction of the Star, which Managing Director Rod Wood MBE says will “stand for generations” and is a “unique, special project that embodies Scotland’s history of innovation and commitment to engineering and green energy”.

It is the ambition of the Star of Caledonia Trust, and it’s public and private funding partners, that the Star of Caledonia will be open to the public for Spring 2027 – a milestone that will have been 25 years in the making.
