Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have once again highlighted the volatility of global energy markets, with crude oil prices rising sharply since the start of the Iran conflict. The situation has renewed discussion around energy security and the UK’s long-term transition toward cleaner and more stable sources of energy.

Speaking to the BBC, Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson noted that rising oil and gas prices highlight the risks of relying heavily on volatile fossil fuel markets. Gas continues to set electricity prices in the UK for much of the time, meaning fluctuations in global fuel markets can quickly translate into higher costs for households and businesses.

The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding clean power generation, with a target for low-carbon sources to meet 95% of electricity demand by 2030. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has stated that accelerating the transition to clean power will be key to improving energy security and helping stabilise energy costs over the long term.

Rod Wood, Managing Director at CWP Energy, commented:

“Global events regularly remind us how exposed energy markets remain to geopolitical risk. Increasing the share of renewable generation will play an important role in improving long-term price stability and energy security for UK businesses and consumers.”

At CWP Energy, we continue to monitor developments across the energy market, helping organisations navigate market volatility and make informed energy procurement decisions.
